Plant & Growing Tips
Avocado
- Avocado trees require a warm, frost-free climate with full sun exposure and well-drained soil.
- While you can grow from a pit, it takes many years to fruit and may not produce quality fruit; grafted trees are recommended for fruit production.
- Ensure consistent watering, especially during dry periods, and protect young trees from strong winds.
Lemon
- Plant lemon trees in full sun with well-drained soil, or in a large container in cooler climates to move indoors during winter.
- Water regularly, especially during dry spells, and fertilize with a citrus-specific food during the growing season.
- Prune to maintain shape and encourage air circulation, removing any dead or crossing branches.
Natural Pest Control
- Monitor avocado trees for avocado thrips and mites, using neem oil spray for control.
- Introduce beneficial insects like ladybugs to manage scale insects and mealybugs on lemon trees.
- Use sticky traps to monitor and reduce populations of flying pests on both avocado and lemon plants.
Harvest
Avocado
- Avocados do not ripen on the tree; pick mature fruit when it reaches full size and then allow it to ripen at room temperature indoors.
- A mature avocado will feel slightly soft when gently squeezed after a few days off the tree.
- Leaving mature fruit on the tree for too long can inhibit new flowering and fruiting.
Lemon
- Harvest lemons when they are fully yellow, firm, and have reached their mature size.
- Gently twist or cut the fruit from the branch, leaving a small piece of stem attached.
- Lemons can be left on the tree for several weeks after ripening without spoiling, but excessive delay can affect subsequent harvests.
