~5 mintotal~215 kcalper serving~22g protein~28g carbs~2g fat

Estimated. Worked out from the ingredients using the UK food composition tables, so treat it as a guide rather than a measurement. A typical recipe lands within about a quarter of the true figure. Makes about 1.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup coconut water or plant milk
  • 1 scoop protein powder
  • ½ cup frozen mango or pineapple
  • 1 tsp grated ginger or turmeric (optional)

Cooking Steps

  1. Add the coconut water or plant milk to the blender first, followed by the protein powder.

  2. Add the frozen mango or pineapple, and the grated ginger or turmeric, if using.

  3. Blend on high for 45-60 seconds until completely smooth; frozen fruit can take a little longer, so stop and scrape down the sides if needed.

  4. Add water if needed for a lighter texture.

  5. Pour and serve immediately.

Optional Enhancements

  • Buy frozen tropical fruit
  • Skip spices if unavailable
  • Dilute with water

Plant & Growing Tips

Ginger

  • Grow from a piece of rhizome with an 'eye' in a warm, humid location with partial shade.
  • Plant in wide, shallow pots with rich, well-draining soil.
  • Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

Turmeric

  • Plant rhizome pieces with buds facing up, 2-3 inches deep in fertile, well-draining soil.
  • Requires a warm, humid environment and partial shade, similar to ginger.
  • Ensure consistent moisture, especially during the growing season.

Natural Pest Control

  • Spray aphids off plants with a strong stream of water or use insecticidal soap.
  • Watch for spider mites during dry conditions and increase humidity around plants.
  • Use neem oil spray as a preventative for various soft-bodied pests.

Harvest

Ginger

  • Harvest 8-10 months after planting, once the leaves begin to yellow and die back.
  • Carefully dig up the rhizomes, brush off soil, and use fresh or cure for storage.
  • For a continuous supply, you can 'rob' small pieces from the edge of the plant without digging it all up.

Turmeric

  • Harvest 8-10 months after planting, typically when the foliage starts to yellow and die.
  • Gently dig up the rhizomes, separate them, and clean thoroughly.
  • Cure rhizomes in a warm, dry place for a week or two before storing.

Storing & Freezing

Consume fresh or refrigerate up to 12 hours.
