Plant & Growing Tips
Blueberries
- Not in the recipe, but grow them for a burst of fresh flavour and antioxidants in your porridge.
- Plant blueberries in acidic, well-drained soil (pH 4.5-5.5) and choose varieties suitable for your climate zone.
- Ensure they receive full sun and consistent moisture, especially during fruit development.
Raspberries
- Not in the recipe, but grow them for a tart, sweet addition to complement your porridge.
- Plant bare-root raspberries in late winter or early spring in a sunny spot with good air circulation.
- Provide a trellis or support system for canes to grow on and water regularly, particularly during dry spells.
Natural Pest Control
- For birds on berries, use netting over your plants as fruit begins to ripen.
- For cane borers on raspberries, prune out and destroy any canes showing signs of wilting or tunneling.
Harvest
Blueberries
- Harvest when berries are fully blue and easily detach from the stem; unripe berries will be tart.
Raspberries
- Pick when berries are deep in colour, plump, and separate easily from their core; overripe raspberries become soft and mushy.
