Plant & Growing Tips
Asparagus
- Plant 1-year-old crowns in early spring in well-drained, sunny beds, 12-18 inches apart.
- Asparagus is a perennial; prepare the bed thoroughly with compost as it will produce for 15-20 years.
- Water deeply during dry periods, especially in its first two years of establishment.
Garlic
- Plant individual cloves in autumn for harvest the following summer, pointy end up, 4-6 inches apart.
- Ensure well-drained soil and a sunny location for optimal bulb development.
- Reduce watering as harvest approaches to help bulbs cure.
Dill
- Sow dill seeds directly in spring after the last frost in a sunny spot.
- Provide support for taller varieties to prevent them from flopping over.
- Dill can be grown in containers, but choose a deep pot to accommodate its taproot.
Parsley
- Sow parsley seeds in spring or autumn, keeping soil moist until germination, which can be slow.
- Plant in rich, moist soil in a spot with partial shade in warmer climates.
- It grows well in pots on a sunny windowsill or patio.
Natural Pest Control
- Hand-pick asparagus beetles from spears and ferns, or spray with neem oil if infestation is severe.
- Rotate garlic planting locations each year to reduce soil-borne diseases and pests like onion maggot.
- Plant dill near onions and carrots as a companion to deter aphids and carrot rust flies.
- Use floating row covers over young parsley to protect against carrot rust flies and leaf miners.
Harvest
Asparagus
- Harvest spears when they are 6-8 inches tall and the tips are tight, cutting them at or just below ground level.
Garlic
- Harvest when the lower leaves begin to yellow and fall over, but there are still 5-6 green leaves remaining.
Dill
- Snip outer leaves and stems as needed once the plant is established, before it flowers.
Parsley
- Harvest outer stems at the base of the plant to encourage new growth from the centre.
