Plant & Growing Tips
Papaya
- Grow papayas from seed in warm, tropical or subtropical climates, planting them in full sun and rich, well-draining soil.
- In cooler regions, they can be grown in large containers and brought indoors during cold weather.
- Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
Lime
- Plant lime trees in a sunny, sheltered spot with well-draining soil in warm climates.
- In cooler areas, grow dwarf varieties in pots that can be moved indoors for winter protection.
- Water regularly, especially during dry periods, but allow the topsoil to dry slightly between waterings.
Pumpkin
- Sow pumpkin seeds directly outdoors after all danger of frost has passed in a sunny location with plenty of space for vines to spread.
- Ensure consistent moisture during flowering and fruit set for optimal growth.
- Provide rich, well-drained soil with plenty of compost or aged manure.
Natural Pest Control
- Spray affected papaya and lime leaves with insecticidal soap or neem oil to control spider mites, ensuring thorough coverage, especially on the undersides.
- Hand-pick adult squash bugs and destroy their egg clusters found on the undersides of pumpkin leaves.
- Use row covers over young pumpkin plants to protect them from cucumber beetles and squash vine borers early in the season.
Harvest
Papaya
- Harvest papayas when the skin begins to turn yellow-orange and feels slightly soft to the touch, gently twisting them from the tree.
- They will continue to ripen after picking if picked when partially colored.
Lime
- Pick limes when they are firm, bright green, and have reached a good size, cutting them from the branch with clippers.
- Limes can be left on the tree for a longer period without spoiling, but flavor is best when fully mature.
Pumpkin
- Harvest pumpkins when the skin is hard, the stem has dried, and the color is uniform, leaving a few inches of stem attached for better storage.
- Cure pumpkins in a warm, dry place for 7-10 days before storing in a cool, dark location.
