Plant & Growing Tips
Sweet Potatoes
- Plant slips in full sun after the last frost, in well-drained, sandy soil.
- They need consistent moisture, especially during tuber formation, and mound soil around the base to encourage more growth.
Avocado
- Grow from a pit started in water, then transfer to a large pot with well-draining soil in a warm, sunny location.
- Provide consistent watering and humidity, protecting young plants from frost.
Natural Pest Control
- Practice crop rotation for sweet potatoes to disrupt the life cycle of sweet potato weevils.
- Control scale insects on avocado by gently wiping them off with a cloth soaked in rubbing alcohol or applying neem oil.
- Increase humidity around avocado plants and spray with water to deter spider mites.
Harvest
Sweet Potatoes
- Harvest when leaves start to yellow and die back, typically 90-120 days after planting slips.
- Carefully dig up tubers with a fork to avoid damage, then cure them in a warm, humid place for 1-2 weeks before storing.
Avocado
- Avocado fruit can take many months to ripen on the tree; pick when mature (full size, dull skin) and let ripen at room temperature indoors.
- Test ripeness by gently pressing the skin; it should yield slightly when ready.
Storing & Freezing
Toast fresh; par-baked planks keep 2 days.
