Plant & Growing Tips

Banana

  • Grow in a warm, tropical or subtropical climate with full sun and rich, well-drained soil.
  • Provide consistent watering, especially during warm periods and when fruiting.

Berries

  • Plant most berries in full sun with good air circulation and well-drained soil; soil pH needs vary by type (e.g., blueberries prefer acidic soil).
  • Provide support for vining berries like raspberries and blackberries, and mulch to retain moisture.

Natural Pest Control

  • Protect berries from birds with netting as soon as fruits begin to form.
  • Hand-pick slugs and snails from strawberry plants, or use copper tape barriers.
  • Spray aphids off young berry plants and banana leaves with a strong jet of water or use insecticidal soap.

Harvest

Banana

  • Harvest bananas when they are full-sized, plump, and the angles are less prominent; they can ripen on or off the plant.
  • Pick individual fruits or entire hands, and allow them to ripen at room temperature until fully yellow.

Berries

  • Pick most berries when they are fully colored, plump, and easily detach from the stem.
  • Harvest frequently to encourage more production and prevent overripe fruit from attracting pests.

Storing & Freezing

Batter best fresh; cooked pancakes keep 2 days and freeze 1 month.
