Plant-Powered Green Protein Shake
Supports digestion, micronutrient intake, and protein needs. Fibre-rich, supports gut health, light and refreshing.
~5 mintotal
Ingredients
- 1 cup water or plant milk
- 1 scoop protein powder (plant or whey)
- 1 handful spinach or kale
- ½ apple or pear
- 1 tbsp chia or flaxseed
Cooking Steps
Add the water or plant milk to the blender first, then the protein powder; blending the liquid with the powder first helps it dissolve without clumping.
Add the spinach or kale, the chopped apple or pear, and the chia or flaxseed.
Blend on high for 45-60 seconds until completely smooth, with no visible flecks of greens.
Taste and add a little more liquid if it is too thick.
Pour and serve immediately, before the greens have a chance to settle.
Optional Enhancements
- Use frozen greens
- Rotate seasonal fruit
- Skip seeds if unavailable
Plant & Growing Tips
Spinach
- Sow seeds in cool weather, either early spring or late summer/fall, in partial shade in warmer climates.
- Keep soil consistently moist to prevent premature bolting.
Kale
- Plant in full sun and well-drained soil, spacing plants 12-18 inches apart for good air circulation.
- Kale is quite cold-hardy and can tolerate some shade.
Apple
- Choose dwarf varieties for containers or smaller gardens, planting in full sun and well-drained soil.
- Ensure cross-pollination by planting a compatible second variety nearby if necessary for fruit set.
Natural Pest Control
- Cabbage worms on spinach and kale can be hand-picked or deterred with row covers.
- Aphids on leafy greens can be washed off with a strong stream of water or treated with neem oil.
- Codling moths on apples can be managed with pheromone traps or by promptly removing fallen fruit.
Harvest
Spinach
- Harvest outer leaves when they are large enough to eat, allowing inner leaves to continue growing.
Kale
- Begin harvesting outer leaves when they are about the size of your hand, working from the bottom up.
Apple
- Pick apples when they are firm, fully colored, and easily detach from the branch with a slight twist.
Storing & Freezing
Consume fresh or refrigerate up to 12 hours.
