Plant & Growing Tips

Banana

  • Plant banana 'suckers' (offshoots) in a sunny location with rich, well-drained soil, protecting them from strong winds.
  • Provide consistent and abundant water, especially during warm weather, as bananas are thirsty plants.
  • Bananas require a consistently warm, frost-free climate to thrive and produce fruit.

Natural Pest Control

  • Monitor for banana weevils and nematodes; rotating crops or using resistant varieties can help prevent issues.
  • Remove diseased leaves and plant debris promptly to reduce hiding spots for pests and prevent fungal diseases.
  • Use neem oil as a natural insecticide to deter various pests, including aphids and spider mites, if they appear.

Harvest

Banana

  • Harvest bananas when the fruit on the 'hand' begins to turn from dark green to a lighter green or yellowish hue.
  • The individual bananas should look plump and well-filled; cut the entire stalk when ready.
  • Bananas will continue to ripen after being cut from the plant.

Storing & Freezing

Consume fresh or refrigerate up to 12 hours.
