Plant & Growing Tips

Papaya

  • Plant seeds or seedlings in a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil once temperatures consistently stay above 15°C (60°F).
  • Provide ample water and nutrients, especially during fruiting, but avoid waterlogging.
  • If growing in a cooler climate, choose a dwarf variety and grow in a large container that can be moved indoors during cold weather.

Lime

  • Grow in full sun in well-drained soil, or in a large container that can be moved indoors if temperatures drop below freezing.
  • Water deeply and regularly, especially when flowers or fruit are forming, allowing the topsoil to dry slightly between waterings.
  • Provide good air circulation to prevent fungal issues and ensure healthy fruit development.

Ginger

  • Plant rhizome pieces with at least one 'eye' in a wide, shallow pot or garden bed in partial shade, in rich, moist, well-drained soil.
  • Keep the soil consistently moist and provide warmth (above 15°C/60°F) for optimal growth.
  • Ginger thrives in tropical or subtropical environments and can be grown indoors in cooler regions.

Turmeric

  • Plant rhizome pieces in warm, humid conditions with partial shade and rich, well-drained soil, similar to ginger.
  • Maintain consistent soil moisture and protect from cold temperatures; it thrives in tropical or subtropical environments.
  • Grow in a wide container to allow rhizomes to spread, providing plenty of room for development.

Natural Pest Control

  • Aphids and mealybugs on citrus and papaya can be controlled by spraying with a dilute neem oil solution every 7-10 days.
  • Inspect plants regularly and hand-pick any larger pests like fruit flies or caterpillars.
  • Use sticky traps near ginger and turmeric plants to monitor and control flying insects.
  • Ensure good air circulation around all plants to deter fungal diseases which can weaken plants and make them more susceptible to pests.

Harvest

Papaya

  • Harvest when the skin begins to turn yellow or orange and the fruit yields slightly to gentle pressure.
  • Pick before fully ripe if you plan to store them for a few days at room temperature.

Lime

  • Pick limes when they are fully green, firm, and feel heavy for their size, or slightly yellow if you prefer a less tart flavour.
  • Snip fruit from the branch using pruning shears to avoid damaging the tree.

Ginger

  • Harvest after 8-10 months when the leaves begin to yellow and die back, carefully digging up the rhizomes.
  • You can also gently harvest small pieces from the side of the plant without disturbing the main rhizome for continuous use.

Turmeric

  • Harvest the rhizomes after 8-10 months, once the foliage starts to wither and turn yellow.
  • Carefully dig up the entire plant to access the rhizomes, which can then be cleaned and prepared.
