Plant & Growing Tips
Mangoes
- Grow in full sun in a warm, frost-free climate, or in a large container that can be moved indoors during cold periods.
- Ensure well-draining soil and consistent watering during flowering and fruiting.
- Protect young trees from strong winds.
Limes
- Plant in a sunny spot with good drainage, or in a large pot for easier winter protection in cooler zones.
- Water deeply when the top few inches of soil are dry, avoiding waterlogging.
- Feed with a balanced citrus fertilizer during the growing season.
Natural Pest Control
- Aphids: Blast aphids off young growth with a strong spray of water or introduce beneficial insects like ladybugs.
- Scale insects: Treat scale insects with horticultural oil or neem oil spray, ensuring full coverage of affected areas.
- Citrus leaf miner: Protect new growth by spraying with horticultural oil every 7-10 days during flush periods.
- Fruit flies: Use sticky traps or cover ripening fruit with fine mesh bags to prevent egg-laying.
Harvest
Mangoes
- Harvest when the skin color changes (specific to variety) and the fruit yields slightly to gentle pressure, often accompanied by a strong aroma.
Limes
- Pick when the fruit is firm, glossy, and fully green; leaving them too long on the tree may cause them to turn yellow and become less acidic.
Storing & Freezing
Freeze up to 1 month.
