Plant & Growing Tips

Cauliflower

  • Plant cauliflower from transplants in rich, consistently moist soil and provide a long, cool growing season.
  • Blanch the heads by tying outer leaves over them once they start to form to keep them white.

Garlic

  • Plant individual cloves point-up in well-drained soil in autumn or early spring, requiring a cold period to bulb.
  • Ensure consistent moisture during bulb formation, but reduce watering as harvest approaches.

Oregano

  • Grow oregano from cuttings or small plants in full sun and well-drained soil.
  • Once established, oregano is drought-tolerant and thrives with minimal care.

Natural Pest Control

  • Protect cauliflower from cabbage worms by using floating row covers or hand-picking caterpillars.
  • Plant marigolds near oregano to deter aphids and other common garden pests.
  • Rotate garlic planting sites annually to reduce the risk of soil-borne pests and diseases.

Harvest

Cauliflower

  • Harvest cauliflower when the head is firm, compact, and about 6-8 inches across, before florets begin to separate.

Garlic

  • Harvest garlic when the bottom few leaves turn yellow and the stems begin to soften, typically in mid-summer.
  • Carefully dig up bulbs and cure them in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area for several weeks.

Oregano

  • Snip leaves and tender stems anytime, especially before the plant flowers for the best flavor.
  • Harvest more heavily in late spring and early summer, leaving enough foliage for continued growth.
