Plant & Growing Tips
Broccoli
- Plant in spring for a summer harvest or late summer for a fall harvest, in full sun and rich, well-drained soil.
- Space plants 18-24 inches apart to allow for good air circulation and head development.
- Ensure consistent moisture, especially as the heads begin to form, to prevent bolting.
Garlic
- Plant individual cloves point-up in well-drained soil in the fall (for hardneck) or early spring (for softneck), about 2 inches deep.
- Keep beds weed-free and water consistently, especially during bulb formation.
- Mulch garlic beds to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
Natural Pest Control
- Cabbage Worms (broccoli): Hand-pick caterpillars or cover plants with fine mesh netting.
- Aphids (broccoli): Spray with a strong stream of water or use insecticidal soap.
- Onion Thrips (garlic): Spray with neem oil or use reflective mulch to deter them.
Harvest
Broccoli
- Harvest the main central head when it is firm, tight, and dark green, before the florets start to yellow or open.
- Continue to harvest smaller side shoots that will develop after the main head is cut to prolong the harvest.
Garlic
- Harvest when the bottom 2-3 leaves have turned yellow/brown and dried, but there are still 4-5 green leaves remaining.
- Gently dig up the bulbs rather than pulling them by the stem to avoid bruising.
