Plant & Growing Tips
Avocado
- Grow in a warm, frost-free climate with full sun and well-draining soil; patience is key as it can take years to fruit from seed.
- Water deeply and regularly, especially during dry periods, but avoid waterlogging.
Romaine Lettuce
- Plant in fertile, moist soil in full sun to partial shade during cooler weather of spring and fall.
- Ensure consistent watering to keep leaves tender and prevent bitterness, especially as temperatures rise.
Mango
- Requires a warm, frost-free climate with full sun and well-draining soil; container growing is an option in cooler regions if moved indoors.
- Provide consistent moisture during flowering and fruit development, reducing water as fruit matures.
Red Onion
- Sow seeds or plant sets in full sun with fertile, well-draining soil in early spring or late fall.
- Keep the planting area weed-free and provide steady moisture during the bulb-forming stage.
Lime
- Grow in full sun and well-draining soil in a warm climate, protecting from frost by bringing container plants indoors.
- Water deeply when the top few inches of soil are dry, but avoid overwatering.
Natural Pest Control
- Use horticultural oil or insecticidal soap for scale insects on avocado and lime trees.
- Protect romaine lettuce from slugs and snails by using crushed eggshells or copper tape barriers.
- Monitor mango trees for fruit flies and use traps or cover ripening fruit with fine mesh bags.
- Rotate onion crops annually to minimize damage from onion thrips and other soil-borne pests.
Harvest
Avocado
- Harvest when the fruit is mature but still firm; it will ripen off the tree in 1-2 weeks at room temperature.
Romaine Lettuce
- Cut outer leaves as needed for a continuous harvest, or cut the entire head at the base when it reaches desired size.
Mango
- Pick when the skin shows some color change, the fruit softens slightly, and a sweet aroma is present near the stem.
Red Onion
- Harvest when the tops fall over and start to yellow, then cure in a dry, well-ventilated area for several days to improve storage.
Lime
- Harvest when the fruit is fully green or slightly yellow, firm, and feels heavy, as limes do not improve in flavor once picked.
