Plant & Growing Tips
Avocado
- Avocado trees grow best in warm, frost-free climates with full sun (6-8 hours daily).
- Ensure well-draining soil; avocado roots are shallow and prone to rot in waterlogged conditions.
- Water deeply and regularly, especially during dry spells, but allow the topsoil to dry slightly between waterings.
Mixed Greens
- Sow mixed greens seeds directly in early spring or fall when temperatures are cool.
- Plant in fertile, well-draining soil and ensure consistent moisture for tender leaves.
- Practice succession planting every 2-3 weeks for a continuous supply of fresh greens.
Cucumber
- Sow cucumber seeds directly after the last frost in a sunny spot with fertile, well-draining soil.
- Provide a trellis or cage for vining varieties to grow vertically, improving air circulation and fruit quality.
- Ensure consistent moisture, especially during fruiting, to prevent bitter cucumbers.
Lemon
- Plant lemon trees in a sunny spot with at least 6-8 hours of direct sun daily.
- Ensure well-draining soil; for containers, use a good quality potting mix designed for citrus.
- Water deeply when the top inch of soil feels dry, but avoid waterlogging.
Natural Pest Control
- Use insecticidal soap or a strong stream of water to control aphids on mixed greens and cucumber plants.
- Protect young avocado trees from snails and slugs with copper tape barriers or by hand-picking.
- Implement companion planting with marigolds near cucumbers to deter pests like cucumber beetles.
Harvest
Avocado
- Harvest avocados when they reach full size and show a slight color change, then allow them to ripen at room temperature indoors.
Mixed Greens
- Cut outer leaves about an inch above the soil line for a cut-and-come-again harvest, allowing the plant to regrow.
Cucumber
- Harvest cucumbers when they reach desired size (typically 6-8 inches), are firm, and bright green.
Lemon
- Pick lemons when they are fully yellow, firm, and easy to detach from the branch.
