Plant & Growing Tips
Cucumber
- Sow cucumber seeds directly after the last frost in a sunny spot with fertile, well-draining soil.
- Provide a trellis or cage for vining varieties to grow vertically, improving air circulation and fruit quality.
- Ensure consistent moisture, especially during fruiting, to prevent bitter cucumbers.
Celery
- Plant celery in a location with consistent moisture and rich, well-composted soil.
- Start seeds indoors 10-12 weeks before the last frost and transplant when temperatures are mild.
- For blanched stalks, mound soil around the base of the plants as they grow.
Spinach
- Sow spinach seeds in early spring or fall, as it prefers cooler temperatures and may bolt in summer heat.
- Plant in rich, well-draining soil and ensure consistent watering for tender leaves.
- Succession plant every 2-3 weeks for a continuous harvest.
Lemon
- Plant lemon trees in a sunny spot with at least 6-8 hours of direct sun daily.
- Ensure well-draining soil; for containers, use a good quality potting mix designed for citrus.
- Water deeply when the top inch of soil feels dry, but avoid waterlogging.
Ginger
- Plant ginger rhizomes in warm, humid conditions, either indoors or in a subtropical/tropical outdoor climate.
- Choose a shady or partially shaded spot with consistently moist, well-draining soil.
- Bury pieces of rhizome with an 'eye' pointing upwards about 2-4 inches deep.
Natural Pest Control
- Use row covers to protect young cucumber plants from cucumber beetles and squash bugs.
- Hand-pick slugs and snails from spinach and celery plants, especially after rain.
- Spray lemon trees with insecticidal soap or neem oil to control aphids and whiteflies.
Harvest
Cucumber
- Harvest cucumbers when they reach desired size (typically 6-8 inches), are firm, and bright green.
Celery
- Harvest outer stalks as needed, or cut the entire plant at the soil line when stalks are thick and crisp.
Spinach
- Snip outer leaves when they are young and tender for a cut-and-come-again harvest, or harvest the whole plant.
Lemon
- Pick lemons when they are fully yellow, firm, and easy to detach from the branch.
Ginger
- Harvest ginger 8-10 months after planting, when leaves start to yellow and die back, by digging up the rhizomes.
