Plant & Growing Tips

Apples

  • Choose a dwarf or semi-dwarf apple tree suited to your climate, planting in full sun with good air circulation.
  • Most apple varieties require cross-pollination from another compatible apple tree nearby to produce fruit.
  • Ensure consistent watering, especially during dry periods, to establish the tree and support fruit development.

Ginger

  • Grow ginger from a piece of rhizome with an 'eye' or growth bud, planted in rich, well-draining soil.
  • Ginger thrives in warm, humid conditions and prefers partial shade, making it suitable for container growing indoors or in a greenhouse.
  • Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, and protect from cold temperatures.

Natural Pest Control

  • Hang pheromone traps in apple trees to disrupt codling moth mating and reduce fruit damage.
  • Use copper tape or diatomaceous earth around ginger plants to deter slugs and snails.
  • Inspect apple trees regularly for aphids and spray affected areas with a strong stream of water or insecticidal soap.
  • Introduce beneficial insects like ladybugs to control aphid populations on apple trees.

Harvest

Apples

  • Harvest apples when they are fully colored, firm, and easily twist off the branch without pulling.
  • Taste an apple to ensure ripeness; it should be sweet and crisp.
  • If left too long, apples may fall from the tree, become mealy, or attract pests.

Ginger

  • Harvest small pieces of ginger rhizome after about 4-6 months by gently digging at the edges of the plant.
  • For a larger harvest, wait until the plant's leaves start to yellow and die back, typically 8-10 months.
  • Wash and dry harvested ginger thoroughly before storing, or replant smaller pieces for a new crop.

Storing & Freezing

Refrigerate once fermented. Consume within 7–10 days.
