Plant & Growing Tips

Cauliflower

  • Sow seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost, then transplant seedlings to a sunny spot with rich, well-draining soil.
  • Requires consistent moisture and cool temperatures; consider succession planting for a continuous harvest.
  • Blanch heads by tying outer leaves over them when they are about 2-3 inches across to protect from sun and keep them white.

Chives

  • Grow from seed, division, or purchased plants in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil.
  • Chives are very cold-hardy and can be grown in pots or directly in the garden.
  • Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells.

Natural Pest Control

  • Cover cauliflower with fine mesh netting or row covers to prevent cabbage worms.
  • Spray chive plants with insecticidal soap if aphids become a problem.
  • Place beer traps or use copper tape around cauliflower beds to deter slugs and snails.

Harvest

Cauliflower

  • Cut the main head when it is firm, compact, and 6-8 inches in diameter, before the curds start to separate.

Chives

  • Snip leaves from the base of the plant with scissors, leaving about 1-2 inches for regrowth; they are cut-and-come-again.
