Plant & Growing Tips

Spinach

  • Not in the recipe, but grow spinach to blend into your shake for an extra nutrient boost without altering the flavour much.
  • Sow spinach seeds directly in the garden in early spring or late summer for best results, as it prefers cooler weather.
  • Plant in rich, well-draining soil with consistent moisture, providing partial shade in warmer climates to prevent bolting.

Natural Pest Control

  • Protect young spinach plants from slugs and snails using beer traps or crushed eggshell barriers.
  • Cover spinach with row covers to deter leaf miners and other flying insect pests.
  • Hand-pick any caterpillars or larger pests found on the leaves to prevent damage.

Harvest

Spinach

  • Begin harvesting outer leaves when they are large enough to eat, about 4-6 weeks after sowing.
  • Cut individual leaves or harvest the entire plant at the base before it starts to bolt (send up a flower stalk) in hot weather.

Storing & Freezing

Consume immediately for best flavour.
