Plant & Growing Tips
Carrots
- Sow carrot seeds directly into loose, stone-free soil after the last frost, ensuring good drainage.
- Thin seedlings to 2-4 inches apart when they are about an inch tall to allow roots to develop fully.
- Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged to prevent roots from splitting.
Ginger
- Plant rhizome pieces with an 'eye' or bud facing up, about 2-3 inches deep, in rich, well-draining soil.
- Grow in a warm, humid location with partial shade, especially in hot climates.
- Keep the soil consistently moist throughout the growing season.
Turmeric
- Plant rhizome pieces with visible buds 2-3 inches deep in fertile, well-draining soil.
- Provide a warm, humid environment and partial shade, particularly in intense sun.
- Maintain consistent soil moisture, but avoid overwatering to prevent rot.
Natural Pest Control
- Use floating row covers over young carrot plants to deter carrot rust flies.
- Hand-pick slugs and snails from ginger and turmeric plants, especially in moist conditions.
- Ensure good air circulation and avoid overwatering to prevent fungal issues in ginger and turmeric rhizomes.
Harvest
Carrots
- Harvest when roots are at least 1/2 inch in diameter at the soil line, typically 60-80 days after sowing.
- Gently loosen the soil around the carrot before pulling to prevent snapping the root.
Ginger
- Harvest mature rhizomes 8-10 months after planting, when leaves begin to yellow and die back.
- Dig up the plant, break off desired pieces, and replant smaller sections for a continuous supply.
Turmeric
- Harvest rhizomes 8-10 months after planting, when the plant's foliage starts to yellow and wither.
- Carefully dig up the entire plant, separate the rhizomes, and cure them in a dry, shaded place before use.
