~5 mintotal~316 kcalper serving~29g protein~26g carbs~11g fat

Estimated. Worked out from the ingredients using the UK food composition tables, so treat it as a guide rather than a measurement. A typical recipe lands within about a quarter of the true figure. Makes about 1.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk or plant milk
  • 1 scoop protein powder (any type)
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • ½ banana or 1 date
  • Ice or water as needed

Cooking Steps

  1. Add the milk to the blender, followed by the protein powder and cocoa powder.

  2. Add the banana half (or pitted date) and a handful of ice if you would like it colder and thicker.

  3. Blend on high for 45 seconds until completely smooth, with no lumps of cocoa powder remaining.

  4. Taste and adjust; add a touch more milk or water if it is too thick, or a pinch more cocoa for a richer flavour.

  5. Pour and serve immediately.

Optional Enhancements

  • Use cocoa instead of chocolate syrup
  • Freeze ripe bananas
  • Skip sweeteners if protein powder is flavoured

Plant & Growing Tips

Mint

  • Not in the recipe, but grow it for a refreshing garnish or to add a hint of flavor to your chocolate shake. Plant mint in containers to prevent aggressive spreading.
  • Mint prefers partial shade and consistently moist, well-drained soil.
  • Regularly snip leaves and sprigs to encourage new growth and keep the plant productive.

Spinach

  • Not in the recipe, but grow it to add extra nutrients to your smoothie without significantly altering its flavor. Sow spinach seeds directly in cool weather, either early spring or late summer/fall.
  • Provide consistent moisture and partial shade in warmer climates to prevent spinach from bolting.
  • Ensure well-drained, rich soil for optimal growth, spacing plants 4-6 inches apart.

Natural Pest Control

  • Use insecticidal soap or a strong water spray to control aphids on both mint and spinach plants.
  • Install floating row covers over spinach beds to protect against leaf miners and other flying insect pests.
  • Hand-pick slugs and snails from spinach leaves in the early morning or evening.

Harvest

Mint

  • Snip individual leaves or whole sprigs as needed for fresh use, ideally before the plant flowers.

Spinach

  • Harvest outer leaves when they are 3-5 inches long, cutting them at the base to allow inner leaves to continue growing for a continuous harvest.

Storing & Freezing

Best consumed fresh. Refrigerate up to 24 hours.
