Plant & Growing Tips
Cauliflower
- Sow seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost, or direct sow outdoors after the danger of frost has passed.
- Plant in full sun (at least 6 hours) and well-draining soil rich in organic matter.
- Maintain consistent moisture, especially as heads form, to prevent bolting and ensure tender growth.
Parsley
- Sow seeds directly in spring or early autumn; parsley can be slow to germinate, so be patient.
- Choose a spot with partial shade in hot climates or full sun elsewhere, and keep soil consistently moist.
- Parsley grows well in containers, provided they are deep enough to accommodate its taproot.
Natural Pest Control
- Use floating row covers over cauliflower from planting to harvest to deter cabbage worms and other flying pests.
- Hand-pick slugs and snails from parsley plants in the evenings or early mornings, or use beer traps.
- Spray affected plants with a mild neem oil solution to control aphids and spider mites on both cauliflower and parsley.
Harvest
Cauliflower
- Harvest when the head is firm, white, and 6-8 inches in diameter, before the curds begin to separate.
- Cut the main stalk just below the head, leaving a few protective leaves attached.
Parsley
- Snip outer stems close to the ground as needed, using the cut-and-come-again method to encourage new growth.
- Harvest regularly to keep the plant productive; avoid taking more than one-third of the plant at once.
