Plant & Growing Tips

Blueberries

  • Not in the recipe, but grow blueberries for a fresh, sweet topping to your waffles.
  • Plant in a sunny location with well-draining, acidic soil (pH 4.5-5.5) and amend with peat moss or pine needles.
  • Ensure consistent moisture, especially during fruit development, using rainwater or acidified water if your tap water is alkaline.

Mint

  • Not in the recipe, but a sprig of fresh mint makes a delightful garnish for waffles, adding a refreshing aroma.
  • Grow mint in containers to prevent its vigorous spreading habit from taking over your garden.
  • Provide partial shade to full sun and keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

Natural Pest Control

  • Cover blueberry bushes with netting as berries ripen to protect them from birds.
  • Spray mint with a strong stream of water to dislodge aphids or spider mites.
  • Hand-pick any caterpillars or slugs found on mint leaves.

Harvest

Blueberries

  • Harvest blueberries when they are fully blue and easily detach from the stem; they will continue to ripen for a few days after picking if left on the bush.
  • Pick individual berries gently to avoid damaging the delicate fruit and surrounding clusters.

Mint

  • Snip mint stems just above a leaf node to encourage bushier growth and continuous harvesting.
  • Harvest leaves as needed throughout the growing season, with the best flavor before the plant flowers.
