Plant & Growing Tips

Chives

  • Not in the recipe, but grow them to snip fresh over the omelette for a mild oniony flavour.
  • Plant from seed or divide clumps in spring in a sunny to partly shady spot.
  • Chives are very cold hardy and can be grown in pots.

Tomatoes

  • Not in the recipe, but grow them to serve as a fresh, sliced side.
  • Plant seedlings after the last frost in a sunny spot with well-drained soil.
  • Provide sturdy stakes or cages for support as plants grow.

Natural Pest Control

  • Spray aphids on chives and tomato plants with a strong jet of water or insecticidal soap.
  • Increase humidity around tomato plants to deter spider mites, or use neem oil.
  • Inspect tomato plants regularly for hornworms and hand-pick them off.
  • Use beer traps or copper tape barriers around young chives and tomato plants to deter slugs and snails.

Harvest

Chives

  • Snip leaves with scissors about 1 inch (2.5 cm) from the ground as needed.
  • Regular harvesting encourages more growth.

Tomatoes

  • Pick when fruits are fully coloured, firm, and easily detach from the vine.
  • Harvest before they become overripe and soft, which can attract pests.
