Carnivore Burgers (No Bun)
Classic beef burger patties with optional cheese. No bun needed.
Estimated. Worked out from the ingredients using the UK food composition tables, so treat it as a guide rather than a measurement. A typical recipe lands within about a quarter of the true figure. Makes about 2.
Ingredients
- 2 Beef burger patties
- 2 slices Cheese (optional)
Cooking Steps
Take the patties out of the fridge 10 minutes before cooking so they cook more evenly.
Heat a heavy frying pan or griddle over medium-high heat until hot.
Season the patties with salt and pepper, then cook for 3-4 minutes per side for medium, or until a meat thermometer reads 71C (160F).
In the last minute of cooking, top each patty with a slice of cheese and let it melt.
Rest for 2 minutes off the heat, then serve on their own or with a simple side salad.
Plant & Growing Tips
Lettuce
- Not in the recipe, but grow it for a fresh wrap or side salad to accompany the burgers.
- Sow seeds directly in cool weather or start indoors and transplant.
- Provide consistent moisture to prevent bolting, especially in warmer periods.
Tomatoes
- Not in the recipe, but grow them for a juicy, fresh topping or side.
- Plant seedlings after the last frost in a sunny spot with well-drained soil.
- Provide sturdy stakes or cages for support as plants grow.
Natural Pest Control
- Hand-pick slugs and snails from lettuce in the evening, or use beer traps.
- Spray aphids on lettuce and tomato plants with a strong jet of water or insecticidal soap.
- Inspect tomato plants regularly for hornworms and hand-pick them off.
- Place cardboard collars around the stems of young lettuce and tomato plants to deter cutworms.
Harvest
Lettuce
- Harvest outer leaves as needed for a cut-and-come-again supply, or cut the whole head when firm.
- Pick before hot weather causes bitterness or bolting.
Tomatoes
- Pick when fruits are fully coloured, firm, and easily detach from the vine.
- Harvest before they become overripe and soft, which can attract pests.
