Plant & Growing Tips

Berries

  • Plant strawberries in full sun in well-drained soil, suitable for containers or hanging baskets.
  • Raspberries and other cane berries require sturdy trellises or stakes for support as they grow.
  • Ensure consistent moisture, especially during fruiting, but avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot.

Lemon

  • Grow lemon trees in full sun in well-drained soil; they are excellent for containers in cooler climates so they can be moved indoors during frost.
  • Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist, but allow the top inch or two to dry out between waterings.
  • Provide a balanced citrus fertilizer during the growing season to encourage healthy fruit production.

Natural Pest Control

  • Cover ripening berry bushes with fine netting to protect the fruit from birds and other wildlife.
  • Hand-pick slugs and snails from strawberry plants, especially after rain, or set out shallow beer traps.
  • Spray lemon trees with insecticidal soap or neem oil to control common pests like aphids and scale insects.

Harvest

Berries

  • Pick strawberries when they are fully red and firm, easily detaching from the stem.
  • Harvest raspberries and blueberries when they are fully colored and detach with a gentle pull; overripe berries become soft and mushy.
  • Harvest blackberries when they are uniformly black and plump, feeling soft but not squishy.

Lemon

  • Harvest lemons when they are fully yellow, firm, and feel heavy for their size, as they will have the most juice.
  • Cut lemons from the tree with pruning shears, leaving a small piece of stem attached to prolong shelf life.
  • Lemons can be left on the tree for several weeks after ripening, but check regularly to avoid them becoming dry.

Storing & Freezing

Freeze up to 2 weeks; soften before scooping.
