Ingredients
- 1 banana
- 1/4 cup oats
- 1/2 cup kefir
- 1 tsp flaxseed
- 1 tsp honey
Cooking Steps
Add the kefir and oats to the blender first and let the oats soak for a minute or two; this softens them for a smoother blend.
Add the banana, peeled and broken into chunks, along with the flaxseed and honey.
Blend on high for about 45 seconds, until the oats are fully broken down and the smoothie is thick and creamy.
If it is too thick, thin with a splash more kefir or a little water. Pour and serve immediately.
Plant & Growing Tips
Strawberries
- Not in the recipe, but grow them to add fresh sweetness and tang to your smoothie.
- Plant bare-root strawberries in early spring in well-drained soil, spacing them 12-18 inches apart.
- They thrive in full sun and benefit from regular watering, especially when fruiting.
Mint
- Not in the recipe, but grow it for a refreshing garnish or subtle flavour in your smoothie.
- Plant mint in a container to prevent its aggressive spreading, using rich, moist soil.
- Give it partial shade to full sun and water consistently to keep the leaves lush.
Natural Pest Control
- For slugs on strawberries, use beer traps or copper tape around beds.
- For spider mites on mint, spray plants with a strong stream of water or use neem oil.
Harvest
Strawberries
- Pick berries when they are fully red, plump, and easily detach from the stem; leaving them too long can attract pests or lead to rot.
Mint
- Harvest sprigs by pinching off stems just above a leaf node; regular harvesting encourages bushier growth and prevents flowering.
