Plant & Growing Tips
Mint
- Not in the recipe, but grow it for a fresh garnish that adds a cooling counterpoint to the sweetness of the nice cream.
- Mint is easy to grow from cuttings or small plants in moist, well-draining soil, preferring partial shade in hot climates.
- Plant mint in containers or use root barriers to prevent it from aggressively spreading throughout your garden.
Strawberries
- Not in the recipe, but grow them for a sweet, fresh topping to your nice cream, adding a burst of flavor and color.
- Plant strawberry plants in full sun with rich, well-draining soil, ensuring consistent moisture, especially during fruiting.
- Consider growing strawberries in raised beds or containers to make harvesting easier and deter pests.
Natural Pest Control
- For mint, watch for spider mites, especially on indoor plants, and spray with a strong stream of water or insecticidal soap.
- Protect strawberries from slugs by placing slug traps or barriers around the plants.
- Deter birds from eating ripe strawberries by covering plants with netting as the fruit begins to color.
Harvest
Mint
- Harvest mint leaves as needed by snipping off stems, preferably before the plant flowers for the best flavor.
- Regular harvesting encourages bushier growth and prevents the plant from becoming leggy.
Strawberries
- Pick strawberries when they are fully red, glossy, and firm; check daily as they ripen quickly.
- Gently pull or snip the stem just above the cap, leaving the cap attached to the berry for better storage.
Storing & Freezing
Freeze up to 1 month; soften 10 minutes before scooping.
