Plant & Growing Tips

Blueberries

  • Not in the recipe, but grow them for a sweet and tangy topping that pairs wonderfully with pancakes.
  • Plant in full sun in highly acidic, well-draining soil (pH 4.5-5.5); consider raised beds if your soil isn't suitable.
  • Ensure consistent moisture and mulch heavily with pine needles or bark to retain soil acidity and suppress weeds.

Raspberries

  • Not in the recipe, but grow them for a burst of fresh, tart flavor to serve alongside your pancakes.
  • Plant canes in full sun in rich, well-draining soil, providing a trellis or support system for primocane varieties.
  • Water deeply and regularly, especially during fruiting, and prune annually to encourage new growth and fruit production.

Natural Pest Control

  • Cover blueberry and raspberry bushes with fine netting during fruiting to protect berries from birds.
  • Monitor raspberry canes for borers and prune out affected canes promptly to prevent spread.
  • Use sticky traps or pheromone traps for spotted wing drosophila if it's a known pest in your area.

Harvest

Blueberries

  • Pick blueberries when they are fully blue and easily detach from the stem; unripe berries are tart.
  • Harvest every few days during the season, as not all berries ripen at the same time.

Raspberries

  • Gently pull raspberries when they are fully colored and easily separate from their white core.
  • Harvest frequently, every day or two, as ripe berries spoil quickly on the cane.
