Plant & Growing Tips
Parsley
- Not in the recipe, but grow it for a fresh garnish to lighten the dish.
- Sow seeds thinly in moist, rich soil after the last frost, or indoors 6-8 weeks prior.
- Parsley prefers partial shade in hot climates and consistent moisture.
Lettuce
- Not in the recipe, but grow it for a crisp side salad.
- Plant seeds directly or transplant seedlings in cool weather, spacing them 6-12 inches apart depending on variety.
- Lettuce needs consistent moisture and at least 4-8 hours of sun daily.
Natural Pest Control
- Protect young seedlings from slugs and snails using beer traps or copper tape barriers.
- Spray aphids off plants with a strong stream of water or use insecticidal soap.
- Use row covers to protect young greens from flea beetles and other flying insects.
Harvest
Parsley
- Snip outer stems close to the base once the plant is established, ensuring you don't take more than a third of the plant at once.
Lettuce
- Harvest outer leaves for a cut-and-come-again supply, or cut the entire head at the base when it reaches desired size before it bolts.
Storing & Freezing
Fridge 3 days; freezes 2 months.
