Plant & Growing Tips

Chickpeas

  • Sow after the last frost in a warm, sunny spot with well-drained soil.
  • Plant seeds about 1-2 inches deep and 4-6 inches apart in rows.
  • Water consistently, especially during flowering and pod development, but avoid waterlogging.

Natural Pest Control

  • Aphids: Spray with a strong stream of water or use insecticidal soap.
  • Pod borers: Hand-pick caterpillars or use Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) spray.
  • Weeds: Keep the area around plants free of weeds to reduce competition and improve air circulation.

Harvest

Chickpeas

  • For fresh eating, pick pods when they are plump and green, similar to snap peas.
  • For dried chickpeas, allow pods to dry on the plant until they turn brown and brittle before harvesting.

Storing & Freezing

Store airtight 2–3 days; re-crisp in the oven.
