Apple Crumble
A classic British dessert with sweet apples and a buttery oat topping.
Ingredients
- 6-8 apples, peeled & sliced
- 2 tbsp sugar or honey
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- Optional: 1 cup rhubarb chopped
- 150g oats
- 100g flour
- 100g butter
- 80g brown sugar
- Pinch of salt

Combine apples with sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice in a baking dish. Add rhubarb if using

Mix oats, flour, sugar, and salt. Rub in butter until crumbly

Scatter crumble topping over fruit

Bake at 180°C for 35-40 minutes until golden and bubbling

Serve warm with custard, cream, or yoghurt
Swaps & variations
- Add chopped nuts
- Add ginger
- Replace flour with ground almonds
- Add vanilla
Storing & freezing
Refrigerate 4 days. Freeze assembled but unbaked for 3 months. Bake from frozen at 170°C for 50 minutes.
Grow it yourself
- Apple trees: Plant bare-root trees in winter. Prune yearly
- Rhubarb: Plant crowns in early spring. Do not harvest in the first year
- Aphids on apples: garlic or soap spray

- Slugs near rhubarb: eggshell barriers
- Apples: Fruit is ready when it lifts easily from the branch
- Rhubarb: Harvest stalks only. Pick when 25-30cm. Twist and pull
