Apple Crumble

A classic British dessert with sweet apples and a buttery oat topping.

Ingredients

  • 6-8 apples, peeled & sliced
  • 2 tbsp sugar or honey
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • Optional: 1 cup rhubarb chopped
  • 150g oats
  • 100g flour
  • 100g butter
  • 80g brown sugar
  • Pinch of salt

Method

    Combine apples with sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice in a baking dish. Add rhubarb if using

    Mix oats, flour, sugar, and salt. Rub in butter until crumbly

    Scatter crumble topping over fruit

    Bake at 180°C for 35-40 minutes until golden and bubbling

    Serve warm with custard, cream, or yoghurt

Swaps & variations

  • Add chopped nuts
  • Add ginger
  • Replace flour with ground almonds
  • Add vanilla

Storing & freezing

Refrigerate 4 days. Freeze assembled but unbaked for 3 months. Bake from frozen at 170°C for 50 minutes.

Grow it yourself

  • Apple trees: Plant bare-root trees in winter. Prune yearly
  • Rhubarb: Plant crowns in early spring. Do not harvest in the first year
  • Aphids on apples: garlic or soap spray
  • Codling moth: pheromone traps
  • Slugs near rhubarb: eggshell barriers
  • Apples: Fruit is ready when it lifts easily from the branch
  • Rhubarb: Harvest stalks only. Pick when 25-30cm. Twist and pull
