Vetkoek with Savoury Mince
Golden fried dough balls filled with spiced curried mince — a beloved South African street food.
Ingredients
- 4 cups flour
- 2 tsp instant yeast
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1½ cups warm water
- 500g beef mince
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 2 carrots, grated
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 1 tbsp chutney or apricot jam
- 1 tsp curry powder
- Salt & pepper
- Oil for frying
Method

Mix flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. Add warm water and oil. Knead 5–10 minutes. Rise for 1 hour until doubled.

Punch down dough. Divide into balls and rest 10 minutes.

Heat oil. Fry each dough ball until golden, turning once. Drain on paper towel.

Sauté onion, garlic, and carrots. Add mince and brown well. Stir in tomatoes, curry powder, chutney, salt, and pepper. Simmer 10–15 minutes until saucy.

Slice vetkoek open and fill with warm savoury mince.

Storing & freezing
Vetkoek freezes up to 2 months. Mince keeps 3–4 days refrigerated; freezes well for 3 months.
